| Conner tells of drug use
Miss USA Tara Conner, who nearly lost her crown for hard-partying in New York nightclubs, admits to People magazine in its upcoming issue that she's used cocaine. "Cocaine was one of the drugs that I did use," she says in the Feb. 12 issue. "It's hard to look back at that." Alcohol, though, was her biggest vice. "I'm an alcoholic. It was a craving thing -- once I put it in my body, I would start craving more," says Conner, who notes she drank heavily but wasn't "getting sloppy drunk and dancing on tables." Conner, 21, says in the magazine that her recent stint in rehab was a wake-up call. "I didn't think I had an issue -- but I was willing to do anything to save my job. . . . I've realized that I suffer from the disease of alcoholism and addiction," says Conner. .
American Men Going Under The Knife for Beauty’s Sake
American men are no longer allowing just the fairer sex to look younger and healthier through the wonders of cosmetic surgery. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) states that between 2000 and 2005 there has been an increase of 16% of men having cosmetic procedures done. According to the ASPS the most popular procedures for men are breast reductions, tummy tucks, lip augmentation, liposuction and eyelid surgery. A breakdown of the various procedures show a whopping 458% increase in lip augmentation since 2000. This dramatic increase is being fuelled by a growing baby boomer population who want to not only look younger, but also continue to be competitive in the job and dating market. FDA speedily approves shunt to save soldiers' limbs Associated Press
A plastic shunt that can temporarily rejoin the severed blood vessels of soldiers wounded on the battlefield won federal approval Friday, after an expedited review urged by the military. Citing the critical need for the shunt, the Food and Drug Administration took less than a week to review and clear for marketing the Temporary Limb Salvage Shunt. The FDA did so after consultations with the U.S. Air Force. The tubelike device is designed to connect the two ends of a severed blood vessel, providing a bridge or shunt around a wound to restore blood flow to an injured limb, the FDA said. It's meant for temporary use in soldiers and other trauma victims who have suffered critical injuries to their arms or legs. The shunt may save injured limbs from amputation, since it can be implanted on the battlefield to maintain blood flow until a wounded soldier undergoes surgery, FDA officials said.
The withering glare of the spotlight can bring anyone down to earth
Let us speak of the sorrows of fame. You are a hot young thing on a promotional tour for your book or movie or perfume and the limo brings you to the small luxury hotel and the celebrity suite where you step into the bathroom and notice a wad of snot protruding from your left nostril. It is the size of the Hope Diamond. How long has this been hanging there? You've spent all day mingling with people ecstatic at the sight of you you you, and yet not one of them dared mention this crusty green mucus ballooning from your nasal cavity. Nor did your publicist Stephanie nor the reporters at the press opportunity. Have you been walking around all day with this excrescence sticking out of your nose??You lie awake, hot tears on your cheek. You are friendless in this world. People fawn over you but they don't like you enough to even lean over and say, "Hey, pal, you need a hanky." The next day, en route to the airport, you notice an item in the paper:People are talking about a certain large enchilada who stood around with a noseful of blechhh the other day as he chatted cluelessly with members of the media.
