Beating the competition by a nose

THE PHILIPPINES may be lagging behind Thailand and Singapore in medical tourism, but it may have an ace that may allow it to beat the competition by a nose.

The Belo Medical Group is targeting the huge Filipino community abroad who may be in need of nose jobs (rhinoplasty), as it joins the governments campaign to encourage people outside the country to avail of the Philippines various medical services.

Rhinoplasty is the most popular cosmetic procedure among Filipinos, especially now that the procedure has become more affordable. Technological advances have also made new noses look natural in Asian faces.

In fact, the Belo Medical Group has already seen, in the last few months, an increase in balikbayan and foreign clients.

We have yet to see a significant influx, says cosmetic surgeon Dr.

The present past

IF YOU ask a baby boomer what she wants to do when she retires, one of the things she's likely to say is "reconnect with friends and family." The urge to circle back around and find old friends is right up there with "get caught up on sleep" and "get liposuction." At a recent workshop about "the next phase," as we are now calling retirement, every person in my breakout group mentioned his desire to reconnect with old friends.

So, it shouldn't have surprised me when I opened the post office box and found a package addressed to Keeper from someone out of his past. Of course, the sender used his real name, because to her, he was Starter Husband. That's right, my husband's first wife sent him a gift. Turns out it was some folk art that Keeper's parents had picked up in South America when he was a child.

Hillcrest Hospital, a Cleveland Clinic Hospital, Unveils Major Campus Expansion Plan

Hillcrest Hospital, a Cleveland Clinic hospital, announced today plans for a five-year, $163 million campus expansion and renovation, making this the largest investment Cleveland Clinic has made to date in one of its nine community hospitals.

"The magnitude of Cleveland Clinic's investment in this project demonstrates the health system's long-term commitment to providing the state-of-the-art, compassionate care Hillcrest Hospital has been known for," said Fred M. DeGrandis, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland Clinic Regional Hospitals. "This re-development project will not only increase patient access to the best healthcare available on Cleveland's east side, it will allow our physicians to spend more time with patients and enable our nurses and staff to work in an environment that exemplifies their professional and medical expertise."

Liposuction surgery not a healthy 'quick fix'

It's no surprise that liposuction is the most popular elective surgery in the United States, where 65 percent of the population is overweight and the popular media glorifies celebrities with size zero waists and abs of steel, but the United Kingdom is getting in on the action now as well. Last year, the number of liposuction surgeries in the UK increased by 90 percent, signifying that cosmetic surgery is gaining popularity all over the world. Even men, who have traditionally been less prone to seek cosmetic surgery due to having fewer standards to live up to, are now looking to liposuction in order to remove the appearance of ''man breasts'' from their chests. This is absolutely insane. Liposuction is a serious surgery that can result in any number of complications, including death. And for what, a tighter tummy or thighs? A little bit of exercise can take care of those and for a lot less money, not to mention the fact that they will actually increase a person's level of fitness.
